CAPITIBUS (2018)

The "Capitibus" series explores the juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary elements, using materials and symbolism to delve into universal themes such as life, death, vanity, transformation, and religion. The series is characterized by its use of heads - a play on the Latin word 'capitibus,' meaning 'head' - which are crafted from various materials and adorned with symbolic details that provoke thought and reflection.

The series begins with polyester heads, which are later replaced by bronze heads cast from the mold of a stuffed cow - specifically, the prototype of the "Holy Cow" project. The numbering of the heads, both in polyester and bronze versions, lends a sense of order and significance to each piece. The use of synthetic fibers in the polyester heads and the historical context of bronze casting create an intriguing dialogue between ancient and modern techniques and materials.

Herck's choice to create both polyester and bronze versions reflects his exploration of opposites, a recurring theme in his work. The use of barbed wire around the cow's head introduces symbolism that touches on themes of Christ's Crown of Thorns, as well as the electrified barbed wire found in contemporary landscapes. This juxtaposition of ancient and modern, sacred and mundane, invites viewers to contemplate the multifaceted nature of symbols and their evolving meanings.

The incorporation of piercings, such as the brass nose piercing and earring with a tag, adds further layers of symbolism. Ear piercing has cultural, spiritual, and historical significance across various societies, and the inclusion of these elements deepens the exploration of identity, status, and ownership. The use of ear tags, typically associated with identifying animals, underscores the artist's commentary on society's treatment of creatures once considered sacred.

Through the "Capitibus" series, Herck draws attention to the complexities of our relationship with animals and the environment, highlighting the stark contrast between their symbolic importance in various cultures and the often exploitative practices that have emerged in modern times. The series serves as a reflection on societal values, questioning the evolution of meaning and the impact of human actions on the world around us.
