EYE FOR AN EYE (2022)

"An Eye for an Eye" encapsulates themes of vanitas, human nature, history, and symbolism. The artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life, the cycle of rise and fall in societies, and the sometimes cruel nature of humanity.

The sculpture takes the form of a decapitated head, drawing inspiration from historical practices of displaying severed heads as symbols of power and dominance. The reference to Vlad The Impaler and headhunting traditions adds layers of historical and cultural significance to the piece.

The incorporation of universal symbols like the spear, skull, and eye further enriches the artwork's meaning. The spear represents both masculine strength and sacrifice, highlighting the dual nature of human existence. The engraved granite stand featuring the Eye of Providence, a symbol of divine protection and omniscience, adds a layer of spirituality and surveillance connotations.

The use of an authentic glass eye prosthesis speaks to the fragile and enduring craft of creating ocular prostheses throughout history. This element serves as a reminder of the past horrors of war and suffering, connecting the artwork to broader human experiences.

The contrast between the polished black eye and the reflective surface allows viewers to see themselves mirrored in the artwork, prompting introspection and reflection on their own human nature. This interactive aspect engages the audience on a personal level and invites them to contemplate the deeper meanings embedded in the piece.

"An Eye for an Eye" is a testament to Herck's ability to create art that goes beyond aesthetics, delving into profound themes that resonate with the human experience. The combination of historical references, symbolism, and interactive elements makes this artwork a compelling and evocative exploration of life, mortality, and the complexities of our existence.
